Waterloo man pleads guilty to federal drug charge

A Waterloo man has pleaded guilty to distributing more than 100 grams of heroin.

The United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa says VonVeta Sawyers, 40, pleaded guilty on Thursday in Cedar Rapids to conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.  Court documents show Sawyers has a prior conviction for a federal drug felony.

Court officials say Sawyers admitted to being involved in the conspiracy to distribute the drugs in the Waterloo area.  They say he also admitted to being involved in distributing crack cocaine and heroin in Waterloo on November 3, 2011 that resulted in someone's death.

A sentencing date has not been set, but Sawyers faces 10 years to life in prison, an $8,000,000 fine and up to eight years of supervised release following any time in prison.
