Granny basketball players on "The Doctors"

We're all trying to live longer, and live healthier. Partially because of that, America's senior population is growing. In fact, it's estimated that by 2030, one out of every five of us will count as a senior citizen.

A few local grandmothers have found an unorthodox way to stay active as they age, and when your doctor says, get more exercise, this is probably not what they have in mind.

"You feel young when you get the basketball in your hands. You don't feel like an old lady!" said Arlene Wear.

Sisters Wear, Marjorie Beatty, and Dolores Rawson are long-time members of the Granny Basketball League.

"It's competitive, very competitive. But when we practice we have a lot of fun," said Rawson.

A few well-known doctors have taken notice of these grannies. In fact, a couple weeks ago, the producers of the program "The Doctors" called, and offered to fly the ladies to L.A. to appear on the show.

"They really treated us like queens!" said Wear.

The grannies took on Dr. Travis Stork, and NBA star Kiki Vandeweghe.

"I shot first and missed. She shot the first shot and made it. Second shot I made it, so we called it a tie," said Beatty.

The sisters are hoping their appearance on the doctors will rub off on other seniors and encourage them to stay active.

"They need to get out of the chair and get exercising. It's just amazing how a little exercise a day can do so much good for everyone," said Rawson.

You can watch the sisters play basketball on "The Doctors" on KWWL Thursday May 24th at 2:00 p.m.
