Immanuel Lutheran School closes

It's been teaching students Christian based lessons for decades. Now a school on Waterloo's east side is set to be demolished.

The congregation at Immanuel Lutheran voted to sell their property, which is located on the corner of Franklin and Highway 63. CVS Pharmacy bought the land and will build a new store in that same spot.

Man of the class rooms are being boxed up as this building is set to be demolished. Many parents say the last day of school is bittersweet. They know many of the students will stay together going to Valley Lutheran School in Cedar Falls, but this building will be gone.

"This year for the first time I've had kids not the last day of school to come knowing this was going to be our last year to Immanuel," said Immanuel Lutheran Principal Barb Buescher.

"When I had kids I knew I was going to send my children here as well," said teacher, Holly Carolus.

Carolus went to school there, her mom went to school there, and she wanted her son to go to school there as well. Right now he's in preschool at Immanuel Lutheran.

"We're like a huge family here. We all just love each other and support each other through crises and pray and we get along really well as a staff and that's one thing I'll miss a lot," said Carolus.

Anne Meyer-Schmitz is a graduate of the school as well. She wanted her kids to have that same kind of education.

"I think it's very important for children these days to grow up with a Christian education and Christian background. There are so many outside influences it's a nice to have it in their daily lives also," said Meyer-Schmitz.

"It's meant a lot to the families. It really is just part of their life so for them it is very sad to see Immanuel Lutheran School not here any more," said Buescher.

While the school closed on Wednesday, the final church service will take place on June 3rd. A new church is being built in Cedar Falls near Valley Lutheran School.
