NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

A North Liberty fire extensively damaged an apartment building and displaced everyone living there, Capt. Craig Voparil with the North Liberty Fire Department said.

Six of those people were adults and two were children.

The fire happened at 4:34 p.m. Tuesday at 365 Beaver Kreek Center in North Liberty. That is located just off of North Dubuque Street.

The North Liberty Fire Department was the first on the scene. When they arrived, they said the building had heavy smoke and flames shooting from the rear of the structure.

The ground floor of the complex is commercial while the second floor contains residential apartments. The nine apartments in the structure are completely destroyed, and the Red Cross is helping those individuals. Voparil said everyone was able to get out of the building without injuries.

One North Liberty Firefighter was treated at an Iowa City hospital for minor injuries.

Voparil said the fire took about four hours to put out. There was extensive fire and smoke damage, but the dollar amount is unknown.

The North Liberty Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall's office are investigating how the fire started.
