Officials urge safety on the waters this Memorial Day Weekend

Every Memorial Day weekend the Brown family of Jesup spends a weekend on the lake.

"The boating, the scenery, the camping. This is a great great place out here, this is the best," said Amy Brown.

While fun is on everybody's mind, the family of six is focused on safety, wearing life jackets and abstaining from alcohol use while out boating.

"It's scary because Memorial Day when all the boats are out and everybody's having a good time, some people aren't paying attention." Brown said.

Lake McBride in Solon is quite now but come Memorial Day it will be jam-packed with boaters. Officials are reminding boaters to do a safety check of their vessels ahead of time to make sure everything is working properly and confirm, at the very least, there's a working life jacket for each person on board.

"By the time you get tossed in the water it's a little late to be thinking about putting a life jacket or a PDF on." Said DNR information specialist Joe Wilkinson.

Boat operators by law are required to limit alcohol consumption and it isn't a bad idea to brush up on the rules of the water by taking a boating education class beforehand.

"It's an investment of a few hours but it's something that sinks in and sticks with you." Wilkinson said.

With the increased volume of boaters, multiple agencies will be ramping up patrol this Memorial Day weekend all with the hopes that for families like the Brown's, the weekend is a fun and safe one.
