Man accused of drunken driving with zebra, parrot

Police charged an eastern Iowa man with drunken driving after stopping him outside a Dubuque bar.  A small zebra and parrot were also in the truck.

Officers arrested 55-year-old Jerald Reiter of Cascade Sunday night in the parking lot of the Dog House Lounge. Reiter says the zebra and macaw parrot are pets, and sometimes the bar lets them inside, but an official at the bar says animals are not allowed inside.  On this occasion, he says the animals had to stay outside because the business was serving food.

People were taking photos of the animals, and Reiter says he thinks a spectator called police.

Officers arrived, gave him a field sobriety test, and charged him with drunken driving.

Reiter is disputing the drunk driving charge, saying he was about to let a passenger take the wheel.

The animals and vehicle were turned over to a friend.
