Mitchell's three-run shot lifts Kernels over Chiefs

Gary Mitchell's three run home run in the eighth inning propelled the Kernels to a 5-4 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Monday afternoon.

After Peoria jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Kernels came back quickly to tie it.  After Andy Workman was hit by a pitch, Mitchell came to bat and drove him home with a double to right field that was mis-played in the outfield.

Mitchell then came home on the very next pitch when Abel Baker hit a single to right field, tying the game at 2-2.

The game would then hit a scoreless lull until the eighth inning when Mitchell hit his three-run shot, giving the Kernels the 5-2 lead.

Peoria would threaten in the ninth, scoring two runs, but the Cedar Rapids tightened up, getting a double play and then a line out to end the game.

Kernels starter Mike Clevinger left the game in the top of the 3rd inning with an undisclosed injury.  Frank De Julio got the win for the Kernels, with Ty Kelley getting the save.

The Kernels are off Tuesday and then travel to Beloit for a three-game series starting on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.

The Kernels return home on Saturday for a series with Quad Cities.
