Cruisin' for Camp Courageous celebrates 25th anniversary

Cruisin' for Camp Courageous is celebrating 25 years of fun and fundraising. The annual auto show brings in tens of thousands of dollars each year to send kids and adults with special needs to camp.

It's also become a tradition for many car lovers -- including Allen Felton. He finished restoring his '65 Chevy Impala just in time for his fifteenth appearance here.

"Kind of means a lot. This car is almost as old as me here!" he said.

Felton attends several classic car shows in the summer. But this one is very close to his heart -- and his home. He lives just a few miles up the road.

"Camp Courageous is a very well kept and well established facility for the handicap kids. And it's, everyone is real friendly and down to earth," said Felton.

The beauty of this show is, in addition to seeing some cool cars, families also get to experience all the great facilities at the camp for every child to enjoy.

"It gives everybody -- people with disabilities, physical and mental, they can do the things you and I do. Everybody does," said organizer Mary Johnson.

In its 25 years, Cruisin' for Camp Courage has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the camp. Participants pay a fee to enter show, and the silent and live auctions typically bring in the big money.

Johnson, and her husband Brad, have led the cause for the past 13 years. Last year alone, they raised a whopping $35,000. This year, they plan to break that record.

"I'd like to raise 40. We do have almost 400 cars on the grounds today," said Johnson. "As long as the weather holds out, that makes it! The weather."

The weather was perfect, and with hundreds of families -- kids in particular -- showing interest in these classic cars, chances are they'll be celebrating the 50th anniversary before you know it.

Camp Courageous serves more than 6,000 campers a year at its site in Monticello. The camp relies entirely on donations. You can find more information about Camp Courageous -- including how to donate -- click here.
