Eastern Iowa goes big at state track, Harrington wins 9th

Posted:

As the state track meet closed on Saturday, several area teams found themselves hoisting championship trophies.

The Dubuque Wahlert girls put an exclamation on their season ending Saturday with a title in the 4 x 400, while capturing the class 3A team state championship--

It was a feat matched by Decorah as Kyle Kregel anchored the Vikings to the 3A 4 x 400 title as they'd also capture the team championship.

Iowa City West senior Charles Rogers won the high hurdles helping the Trojans to their first team title in 5 years.

The Cascade girls, who opened the day with a sprint medley title and a 1500 meters championship from Mariah Kauder, rounded out the area team champions capturing the trophy in class 2A.

Eastern Iowa athletes put together some solid individual performances on Saturday as well.

Lisbon's Connor Smock captured his 8th title winning the 1A 1600 meters.  Grundy Center's Nathan Schmadeke took top honors in the 1A high hurdles.  Iowa City High edged cross-town rival West for the shuttle hurdle relay title, while Dyersville Beckman captured gold in the 2A event --

On the girls side freshman Jasmine Staebler got her second win anchoring the Clayton Ridge sprint medley to a state championship.  Anna Holdiman of Waverly-Shell Rock also got a second with a title in the 3A 1500 meters, and Jesup's Lindsey Kite put up a big effort to capture her second straight in the class 2A 800 meters.

"You really want to win," said Kite, "You don't want to lose your title.  It was definitely worth it."

All day, however, all eyes were on Cedar Falls senior James Harrington, and he didn't disappoint.   Harrington rounded out his career on Saturday winning the 100 meters, the 200 meters, while rallying in the 4 x 100 to put the Tigers on top.  In all Harrington ended one of the greatest high school careers ever with 9 total state championships.

"It went by so fast I had a lot of fun," said Harrington, "A lot of success, and made a lot of friends, built a lot of relationships, and that's what this is all about.  It's having fun, and competing to the best of your ability."
