Volunteers replant Vinton's lost trees

Volunteers are working to restore one Eastern Iowa town's landscape following last summer's windstorm. The July 2011 storm only lasted a few minutes, but it destroyed thousands of trees in Vinton.

Saturday, crews made progress in replacing them. More than 40 trees were planted around town.

The trees were donated by local organizations, including Trees Forever and the Cedar Rapids Gardening Club. But it will take decades before the town's streets and parks look like they did before the storm.

"Hopefully next year we'll have another one of these, six months have another one. It's a slow process. We've replaced 40 trees out of the thousands lost. It's unbelievable," said Brian Elwick, a foreman with the city's Parks & Recreation Department.

Several families in town also donated funds for the project. Many of them planted trees in their loved ones honor today.
