Ride Safe Poker Run honors Parkersburg native

More than 100 motorcyclists hit the highway this afternoon to honor a fallen friend -- and increase motorcycle awareness.

Kris Walters was killed last spring while riding his motorcycle in Parkersburg. Saturday, his friends led the Ride Safe Poker Run from Cedar Falls to Dike in his memory.

The second stop of the afternoon was in Parkersburg. Riders drove into the cemetery where Walters is buried, and his best friend Justin Penwell placed a tribute coin at his grave. The entire event was organized by Walters' wife, who is hoping to prevent another family from going through what she's experienced.

"All of this is all planned by her. She really has gone above and beyond. She's really getting the message out too. Who knows how many lives she's saved by getting the message out there," said Walters.

That message, again, is for drivers to watch out for motorcycles.

The ride is also a fundraiser for another area motorcyclist who lost his leg and finger in a crash last fall.
