Friday'loo showcases revitalized downtown Waterloo

Hundreds of people gathered in Lincoln Park for live music, food, and family activities at the first Friday'loo of the season.

"It's a labor of love for the whole community. And that's what Main street is all about, is making... creating community," said Main Street Waterloo Executive Director Jeff Kurtz.

All the labor is paying off for local families. Between the music, the food, and the fun, Shay Caley and her newborn son Jameson are enjoying the first concert of the summer series.

"Just thought we'd come down and enjoy the live music and introduce our little guy to downtown Waterloo!" said Caley.

Jameson is getting a bit of an early start, but that's exactly the goal for Main Street Waterloo organizers. For folks to introduce -- or reintroduce -- their friends and family to a revitalized downtown.

"This is about trying to change those perceptions. We want to have people come downtown, have a great experience," said Kurtz. "This is a really wonderful venue for live music. And then hopefully go experience the businesses that are down here. Meet some of the wonderful hard-working people who call this place home and change their perceptions. Because this is a great place to live, work, and hang out."

Caley said some of her friends still have negative opinions about the downtown area. Although she believes -- and, honestly, hopes -- their opinions are changing.

"I don't think people know the wonderful things that are going on downtown. Waterloo has a lot to offer, and I think if people look for things to do they'll find it," she said.

Luckily, they don't have too look too far -- especially not on Fridays.

There are at least two Friday'loo's scheduled each month this summer. For more information visit
