Kernels late rally sinks River Bandits

With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, the Cedar Rapids Kernels scored four runs and then hung on through the bottom half of the inning for the 5-3 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits.

After going down 3-0, the Kernels scored their first run of the game in the seventh inning when Wendell Soto scored on a Kevin Moesquit double.

Still down 3-1 in the top of the ninth, Carlos Lugo came to bat for the Kernels with two outs. Lugo was hit by a Heath Wyatt pitch, sending him to first base. Then, pinch-hitter Ryan Jones hit a single to put two runners on.

Moesquit then came to bat for Cedar Rapids. His grounder to the third baseman Garrett Wittels looked like it was the end of the game, but Wittels' throw to first was off target, and Moesquit snuck safely past the tag attempt, loading the bases.

Trevor Hairgrove then grounded to Wittels, but his throw to first was off target again, pulling the first baseman off the bag and allowing Hairgrove to reach safely while Lugo scored.

With the bases still loaded, Kaleb Cowart hit a triple to left-center field, scoring Jones, Moesquit and Hairgrove, giving the Kernels the 5-3 lead.

Joe Melioris got the save for Cedar Rapids, allowing no runs and no hits in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the win.

Carmine Giardina got the win in relief for the Kernels, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one and walking one in one inning of work.

Cedar Rapids' Frank De Jiulio pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three and walking one.

Eswarlin Jimenez was the Kernels starter. He threw five-plus innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one.

The Kernels wrap-up their series in Davenport on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Kernels return home Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. vs. Kane County.
