Kernels nip the Bandits 2-1

The Cedar Rapids Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held on to win 2-1 on Sunday.

The Kernels first run came on a series of mistakes by the Quad Cities Bandits right out of the gates.  Kevin Moesquit, the lead-off batter, was walked by Bandits starting pitcher Tyrell Jenkins.  Moesquit then stole second base, but advanced on a throwing error by catcher Juan Castillo.  Moesquit then scored when Jenkins threw a wild pitch.

Kaleb Cowart then scored later in the inning on an Andy Workman single.

The Quad Cities Bandits scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning on a series of walks by two Kernels pitchers.  Kernels starter Austin Wood walked Roberto Reyes to start off the inning.  Then, after two fly outs, Wood walked Anthony Garcia.

Wood was then replaced by relief pitcher Aaron Meade, who walked Colin Walsh and Juan Castillo to cut the Kernels lead to 2-1.

In all, there were 14 walks in the game and only six hits.  Kernels pitchers gave up 10 of those walks.

Wood threw four and two-thirds innings for the Kernels.  He struck out seven and walked seven.

Meade picked up the win for the Kernels, throwing two and one-third innings.  He pitched two and one-third innings, walking two and no strikeouts.

Stephen Tromblee went one and two-thirds innings.  He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out two and walking one.

Ty Kelley picked up the save by retiring the only hitter he faced.

The Kernels take on the Bandits again Monday evening at 7:00 p.m.
