Camels come through Cedar Falls

A Cedar Falls family hosted some very unusual visitors Sunday night, as a pair of camels spent the night!

The camels are on their way from California to the Green Chimneys Farm in New York.  Green Chimneys is a residential school for special needs children, and the camels will be part of their farm and animal assistive therapy program.

Linda Nebbe works with local animal volunteer groups and teaches at UNI.  She was happy to help accommodate the camels as a teaching moment for students as the animals make their cross-country trek.

"Human interactions with animals in nature is essential for mental health and physical health and well being.  And without that link, we really are doing ourselves a dis-service.  So it's bringing awareness to the fact that all nature, all animals are important and our interactions together," Nebbe said.

After leaving Iowa, the camels will continue their trek, arriving in New York on May 18.
