Alburnett multi-generational playground built in one day

It started with an entry in a nationwide contest.

Now, a Linn County community has a brand new playground thanks to winning that contest.

Susanne Haehlen, a retired teacher, won a sweepstakes to get a multi-generational playground built in her town, Alburnett.

Saturday around 200 volunteers - along with the Alburnett Schools Foundation and Humana Health Care - built the playground at the Martin Sports Complex.

The playground isn't just for kids.

It features senior and adult-focused elements like fitness stations and walking paths, along with the usual slides and monkey bars for kids - all with a pirate theme due to the school's sports teams mascot.

Even though it was all assembled in one day, it won't be open for play for several days because the concrete needs a little more time to set.
