Annual Waterloo ABATE Ride brings awareness to motorcycles on the road

Area motorcyclists are reminding drivers to watch out for their two-wheeled allies on the road.

Saturday afternoon hundreds of people hit the road for the annual ABATE (A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education) ride through Black Hawk County. The organization is working to raise awareness of motorcyclists on the roads and hopefully prevent crashes this summer.

Jim "Bulldog" Will, the ABATE of Iowa District 16 coordinator said they're seeing more people on two wheels lately.

"It's getting more and more every year because with gas prices people are trading in their -- they're only driving their pickups and stuff when they absolutely need it," he explained.

Riders enjoyed Saturday's weather quite a bit more than last year. Only a handful of motorcyclists made it to the last stop in 2011 due to rainy, cold weather. This year, a few hundred rode the entire route.
