Kernels squander early lead, fall to Bees

BURLINGTON (KWWL) -

The Kernels squandered an early lead, falling to the Burlington Bees on Thursday afternoon, 8-6.

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Ryan Jones hit a triple to score Kevin Moesquit and then scored himself on a throwing error by Bees second baseman Chih-Fang Pang.

Cedar Rapids doubled their lead in the second. Jones singled, bringing home Gary Mitchell, and Carlos Lugo scored later on when Kaleb Cowart got on base thanks to an error by Burlington shortstop Sean Jamieson.

After Burlington tied the game in the fourth, Cedar Rapids would take a 5-4 lead in the fifth, thanks to a solo shot to right center by Ryan Jones.

The Bees knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth when Dusty Robinson scored on a ground out by Douglas Landaeta.

Burlington then took command, scoring three runs in the sixth on RBI's by Jamieson, B.A. Vollmuth and Dusty Robinson.

The Kernels made it 8-6 in the 8th inning when Chevy Clarke scored on a Gary Mitchell infield single with two outs, but that is as close as Cedar Rapids would get.

Jairo Diaz took the loss for the Kernels, going 5-plus innings. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits, with four K's and two walks.

The Kernels wrap-up their series at Burlington on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.  They then head to the Quad Cities for a four-game series. Cedar Rapids returns home on May 16 to take on Kane County.
