Tiny Marion airport closes

After nearly 50 years, the grass-strip McBride Airport has closed.

The tiny airport is located in Marion. Melvin McBride created the air strip out of farm land the family had owned since the 1920's. He later shaped a 2,400 foot grass runway, built a hanger and relocated an old service station to the property to serve as an office.

The airport opened in October 1962.

McBride's 19-year-old Don plans to again farm the land.
