Kernels sting Bees in Burlington


The Cedar Rapids Kernels put up 12 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 14-2 rout of the Burlington Bees on Wednesday.

All nine Kernels batters went to the plate in the first inning, scoring three runs.  Ryan Jones doubled to score Kevin Moesquit.  Then, Matt Scioscia singled, scoring Kaleb Cowart and Jones, giving the Kernels the 3-0 lead.

After Burlington scored a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1, the Kernels sent eight more hitters to the plate in the second and took advantage of three Burlington errors to score five more runs.

Jones' double scored Moesquit and Trevor Hairgrove.  Cowart then scored on a wild pitch by Jonathan Joseph.  Jones and Andy Workman each scored in the inning on ground outs by Chevy Clarke and Scioscia, making it 8-1 Kernels.

Cedar Rapids scored four more times in the third inning as they sent eight more batters to the plate.  Cowart doubled to score Wendell Soto and Moesquit.  Jones then singled to score Hairgrove and Cowart scored when Workman reached base on a fielder's choice.  Kernels were up 12-1 after just three innings.

The Bees scored their final run of the game in the sixth with Chih-Fang Pan's lead-off home run.  Kernels were up 12-2.

Cedar Rapids scored their final two runs in the ninth.  Cowart hit a two-run shot to left center making it 14-2.

Mike Clevinger got the win for the Kernels, allowing two runs in seven innings of work.  He allowed three hits, struck out six and walked three.  Frank De Jiulio and Logan Odom pitched in relief, allowing no runs and no hits.

The Kernels and Burlington play game two in Burlington on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m.
