Kernels avoid sweep by beating Timber Rattlers


The Cedar Rapids Kernels used an early lead to stave off surges by the Timber Rattlers and avoid the sweep, winning 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Kernels got on the board with two outs in the second inning when Abel baker hit a double to right field, scoring Matt Scioscia.  Then, Wendell Soto smacked a two-run shot to right field to give the Kernels the early 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin scored a run in their half of the second when Yadiel Rivera came home while the Kernels were turning a 4-6-3 double play.

The Timber Rattlers then tied the game in the third on a two-run shot by Brandon Macias.

In the fourth, the Kernels took a 5-3 lead on a Scioscia home run and an RBI single by Wendell Soto that scored Chevy Clarke who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Wisconsin made it a one-run game in the sixth when Ben McMahan hit a triple, scoring Greg Hopkins.

The Timber Rattlers had tying and go-ahead runs on base in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings, but the Kernels bullpen was able to hold them off.

Eswarlin Jimenez got the win for the Kernels.  He pitched five innings, giving up three runs on five hits.  He struck out three and walked four.

Stephen Tromblee threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out one.

Joe Melioris pitched one and a-third innings, giving up one run on four hits.

Ty Kelley picked up the save, pitching two inning.  He allowed no runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Kernels head to Burlington for a series that begins on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
