Work to improve dangerous Hwy 218 intersection included in DOT draft plan

Another step has been taken to improve safety at a dangerous eastern Iowa intersection.

Road work for the intersection of Highway 218 and C-57/Cedar Wapsi Road is included in a draft five year program for the Iowa DOT.

The draft plan was unveiled at a DOT commission meeting Tuesday in Ames.

Work would include a new bridge, lighting and traffic signs, with nearly $21 million allocated for improvements from fiscal year 2013 to fiscal year 2017.  Most of the repair work will happen in fiscal years 2015-2016.

Black Hawk County Sheriff Tony Thompson has said statistically, this intersection has been one of the worst in the state for crashes several years.  "We got the ball rolling. I'm happy," he said, Tuesday afternoon.

Two other major improvement projects in Black Hawk County are included in the draft.  One at Viking Road and Highway 58 in Cedar Falls, and another at Hudson Road at Highway 20.
