Ousted Iowa Supreme Court Justices recognized

Three former Iowa Supreme Court justices were honored Monday for their decision to make gay marriage in Iowa legal.

Caroline Kennedy presented this year's John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award to former Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and former justices David Baker and Michael Streit.

The award honors public servants who have made "courageous decisions of conscience" without concern for how it would affect them professionally or personally.

Voters ousted the three justices from the Supreme Court after their ruling.

"We knew that our decision would be unpopular with many people," Ternus said.  "We even knew, in the back of our minds, that we could lose our jobs because of our votes in that case."

The presentation happened at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

The U.S. Ambassador to Syria was also honored, for his role in supporting opponents of President Basher Assad's regime, a policy that put his life at risk.
