Iowa City takes part in Jane Jacobs walk

People in Iowa City are taking an active role in improving the downtown and a surrounding neighborhood, walking for a better future.

City councilman Jim Throgmorton organized a Jane Jacobs walk through Iowa City.  The walk is modeled after the American-Canadian writer who has been recognized for her efforts to protect the flavor of local neighborhoods during times of urban renewal.

The group discussed ways to transform the Riverfront neighborhood into a more vibrant and liveable area.

"We're going to walk through the area, looking at it through Jane Jacobs eyes, but because she was never here and never wrote about Iowa City, we're going to try to bring our own insights to it," said Jim Throgmorton of the Iowa City council.

The event is sponsored by the city of Iowa City, University of Iowa School of Urban and Regional Planning, and the Iowa City UNESCO city of literature.
