Kings push Blues to the brink

Posted:

The Los Angeles Kings had to win a four-team battle last month just to grab the last seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Now, they are just one victory away from advancing to the conference finals after taking a three-games-to-none lead over the second-seeded St. Louis Blues.

Drew Doughty had a goal and two assists as the Kings doubled up the Blues 4-2. Doughty set up the eventual game-winner by Mike Richards midway through the second period, then capped the scoring with 11:48 remaining.

Dwight King and Justin Williams also tallied, and Jonathan Quick turned back 18 shots to help the Kings take a 3-0 series lead for the second consecutive round.

The Kings can wrap up the series at home on Sunday.

The New Jersey Devils own a two-games-to-one lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals after beating Philadelphia in overtime.

Alexei Poniards scored at 17:21 of the extra session to complete the Devils' 4-3 win over the Flyers. New Jersey had just killed off two penalties in OT before Ponikarovsky notched his first goal of the postseason.

Ilva Kovalchuk set up the game-winner and finished with two goals and an assist after sitting out Game 2 with a lower back injury. Martin Brodeur  stopped 25 shots for the Devils, who host Game 4 on Sunday.
