Fire damages vacant lumberyard building


The Cedar Rapids Fire Department and Arson Hotline are looking for information as to how a vacant building caught on fire Wednesday night.

It happened about 10:19 p.m. at 919 6th St. S.W. in Cedar Rapids. A passerby noticed smoke coming out of the building and called 911.

Firefighters said the fire started on the first floor of a two story wooden framed building.

The building was part of a lumber yard that had been vacant for several years.

The property owners are listed as Adair Holdings, LLC, of Omaha, Nebraska. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There are no working utilities in the building and there are notices posted indicating that the structure is dangerous and unsafe to occupy.
