Black Hawks beat Lincoln in game one of Western Finals

The Waterloo Black Hawks took off to a terrific start in Wednesday's game and in their Western Conference Championship series against the Lincoln Stars with a 5-2 win at the Ice Box on the Nebraska State Fairgrounds.

The Hawks pulled ahead just 46 seconds into the matchup.  Mike Huntebrinker's errant shot caromed off the end boards to Max Edson.  His pass across the crease found A.J. Michaelson for a tap in.  Waterloo made the score 2-0 14 minutes later, when Taylor Cammarata's dish into the left wing circle set up a scoring wrist shot for Scott MacDonald.

Tyler Zepeda chased Lincoln starting goaltender Charles Williams to the bench 3:37 into the second period.  A turnover left Zepeda facing Williams one-on-one, and the Hawks veteran scored on his own rebound after a pad save on his initial chance.  Lincoln shot back into the game during the final minutes before intermission.  At 16:20 Will Suter put the home team on the board with a chance from the top of the crease.  On the power play 1:25 later, Kevin Roy found the net after an initial shot from the point by Bob Kinne.

Waterloo made sure their lead would stand up in the third.  Ryan Papa added to the margin at 3:17, going up the middle of the ice and jamming a puck into the net.  Cammarata sealed the win with 2:34 remaining, delivering a power play goal from goalie Jackson Teichroeb's left side.

Stephon Williams earned the win with 32 saves.  The Stars outshot the Hawks 26-18 over the final 40 minutes, and 34-29 for the contest. Game Two between the Hawks and Stars is slated for Friday night, also at the Ice Box.
