IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa City police are investigating the death of a toddler.

Police say they were called to 2018 Waterfront Drive #120, around 12:06 p.m. Monday for a report of a baby having trouble breathing.

Police say 20-month-old Marcus Balderas was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where he later died.

A preliminary autopsy has been done, but the final results are not available and a cause of death has not been confirmed. Police say the death is being considered suspicious.

Four days earlier, police say 20-year-old Jorge Jesus Perez left his 20-month-old stepson alone for up to 20 minutes at the same address.  Police say he left the child alone because he felt rushed to get to school.  The officer reported that Perez did not seem concerned about leaving the child unsupervised.

Perez has been charged with child endangerment in that incident.
