Two sentenced for heroin overdose deaths

Two Iowa City men have been sentenced for giving heroin to two people who later died from drug overdoses.

Thomas Finley, 63, of Iowa City will spend nearly 22 years in federal prison. Patrick Toomey, 57, will serve a little more than five.

Both men pled guilty in October to conspiring to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin.

Both Toomey and Finley admitted the heroin they conspired to distribute caused the death of one of their customers in March 2011. In addition, Finley admitted he distributed heroin to another individual who died as a result of using the heroin.

There is no parole in the federal system.

Toomey was released on the bond previously set and is to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on a date yet to be set. Finley is being held in the United States Marshal's custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
