Dubuque school board calls meeting to "Appoint Acting Superintendent"

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Tuesday afternoon, the Dubuque school board announced a meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday. The only agenda item is to, "Appoint Acting Superintendent."

Board president Craig Beytien said on Tuesday, superintendent Larie Godinez informed the district she would be taking a voluntary, temporary and indefinite leave of absence, effectively immediately. Beytien said this was Godinez's decision.

In a phone call shortly after the announcement, Godinez said she had not told the board anything and would not be making any further comments until she has sought legal counsel.

Beytien said the acting superintendent the board will appoint Wednesday is not a permanent replacement for Godinez, just a temporary, acting superintendent.

All this comes after Monday night's special board meeting, in which board members unanimously voted to move forward with considering terminating Godinez's contract. They cited a loss of confidence in Godinez and what they call her failure to lead effectively.

Beytien said Monday night Godinez will have five days from receiving written notice of the decision to respond to the board whether she wants a hearing in front of the district or an administrative law judge.

Wednesday's meeting is open to the public and at the district's headquarters.
