Waterloo inflating new dam on Monday

The City of Waterloo will mark another completed project in the River Renaissance Project on Monday when they inflate the bladder dam on the Cedar River.

Repairs to the dam began in 2007 and were stalled during the record floods of 2008. After repairs started up again, the dam was fitted with a rubber bladder.

The inflatable dam will allow the city to raise the upstream level by four feet in the summer months, allowing for more boating and water sports downtown.

The dam can be lowered when the river levels are high and individual sections may be lowered to clean out debris.

A brief ceremony will be held at the dam's control building on west 4th street. It will start at 11:00 a.m.
