Federal spending inquiry for NEICIL

After 16 years of service, The Northeast Iowa Center for Independent Living in Waterloo has closed.

The center's mission is to help disabled and elderly people live on their own.

As we first reported earlier in April, the center had trouble meeting growing demands while still making ends meet.

The agency spent about $500,000 dollars per year on services.

The Des Moines Register reports there's a federal inquiry into the center's spending practices.

The closure means about 14,000 people in Black Hawk, Bremer, Butler, Buchanan and Grundy counties are without services.
