Waterloo drug disposal part of nationwide effort

People dropped off thousands of unwanted pills and other drugs at the Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health Center in Waterloo Saturday morning.

The nationally sponsored event allows anyone to drop off any medication at the site, no questions asked.

Waterloo Police officers were present only to ensure the drugs were properly disposed.  The goal is to prevent legal and illegal drugs from getting in the wrong hands.

"To get the drugs, either expired drugs or drugs that no one is -- they didn't take the whole prescription, out of the home so they're not taken by someone inadvertently or taken by someone in order to get high," said Alice Baruth, of Pathways Behavioral Services.

Many pharmacies and hospitals accept unwanted drugs year-round.  Similar events were held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Marengo Saturday.
