Black Hawks beat Omaha for 2-1 series lead

The Waterloo Black Hawks protected home ice Friday, defeating the Omaha Lancers 4-2 at Young Arena, and in the process took a two-games-to-one lead in their best-of-five playoff series.

The Lancers didn't waste any time, pulling ahead 1-0 just 21 seconds into the game.  After Waterloo couldn't clear the zone, the puck found Casey Bailey behind the net.  Bailey hit Jimmy Murray with a pass, and the Lancers' leading regular season scorer – alone in the slot – buried a wrist shot.  The Hawks answered from long distance when Omaha couldn't get the puck out of their zone at 12:54.  Mitch Witek kept it at the line and feathered a feed to Alex Barron, who blasted it over the shoulder of Alex Lyon.

Taylor Cammarata's partial breakaway pushed the Hawks in front for the first time 16:35 into the second period.  Getting a pass from Mike Huntebrinker who was going to the bench, Cammarata stickhandled to the front of the net and slid a chance under Lyon, who went into the net on top of the puck.  Omaha evened the game again at 18:22, when Kevin Schulze's centering pass turned into a goal as it deflected off of a Black Hawks defensemen.  However, the Hawks' got a fortuitous bounce less than a minute later; with 59.4 seconds remaining before intermission, Tyler Zepeda's shot went off of a Lancer skate and through the pads of Lyon.

Huntebrinker scored the only goal of the third, splitting defenders and sliding the puck between his own skates and into the net at 5:21.  Waterloo won the third 4-2 game of the series after Game One and Game Two ended with the same score.  Stephon Williams claimed the victory with 25 saves.  His fourth postseason victory tied him for third in Hawks' playoff

Waterloo will try to close out the series during Game Four on Saturday.
