Kernels give up 17 hits in home loss to South Bend


The Cedar Rapids Kernels gave up 17 hits and 10 runs Thursday night in a 10-1 loss to South Bend.

The Silver Hawks scored all the runs they would need in the second inning.  Marc Bourgeois, who walked to begin the inning, scored on a two out single by Josh Parr.  Parr would steal second and then score when Trevor Hairgrove made a throwing error on a Ender Inciarte single.

South Bend began the third inning with back-to-back walks by Tom Belza and Gerson Montilla. Belza would score on a Matt Helm single and Montilla scored on a single by Marc Bourgeois, making it 4-0 South Bend.

The Silver Hawks doubled their score in the fifth inning on a three run home run by Bobby Stone and an RBI double by Belza which scored Inciarte.

The Kernels finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Ryan Jones scored on a Frazier Hall single.

South Bend would score their final two runs in the eighth when Roidany Aguila hit a double scoring Montilla and Helm.

Austin Wood took the loss for the Kernels.  He gave up four runs on six hits, struck out six and walked four in three and two-thirds innings. 

Jacob Negrete pitched one and a third innings in relief, giving up four runs on five hits.

Carmine Giardina gave up no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one in two innings of work.

Logan Odom pitched the final inning for the Kernels.  He gave up two runs on four hits while striking out one and walking one.

The Kernels will try to bounce back on Friday in game two at Perfect Game Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
