Gooris wins decathlon, Eastern Iowa big on Thursday at Drake

Thursday started off with a bang for UNI decathlete Daniel Gooris. Gooris finished decathlon winning the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes 31 seconds.

The Panther senior posted the 10th best score in the nation this season, as he helped UNI capture their 6th Drake decathlon title in the past 9 seasons.

"I know it's a UNI tradition, said Gooris, "We've been carrying it a little while, and since Matt Clark wasn't here this year, I had to step up and get a big score."

On the women's side UNI's Olympia Nowak was the top collegiate finisher in the heptathlon taking second while breaking a school record.  Former Hawkeye Peaches Roach-Findley took top honors.

The Hawks were impressive again in the 4 by 1,600.  Senior Megan Melander anchored Iowa home 2 seconds ahead of Big Ten rival Minnesota, as Iowa picked up their first ever Drake title in the event.

"We've waited 4 years for this since I got here," said Melander, "and so it's a great sense of achievement."

On the high school side, CF's Allison Gregg and Waverly-Shell Rock's Anna Holdiman took second and third respectively in the 3,000 meters behind Griswold freshman Rebekah Topham.

Dowling Catholic's Cole Decker took the 3,200 by just .07 seconds while top qualifier Josh Evans of Linn-Mar took third.

Eastern Iowa was big in the long jump with Dequayvious Martin of Waterloo West grabbing 5th, Iowa City's West's Charles Rogers jumped himself into 4th, and Derek Jacobus of Cedar Rapids Kennedy would go 22 feet 9 inches in his final jump to finish in the runner up spot.

"My long jump coach said if I broke 22 he'd get me a dinner," Jacobus joked, "I'm hoping to go to Hickory Park tonight, get some ribs."
