Could Price Lab in Cedar Falls stay open one more year? It's currently scheduled to close June 30, as the University of Northern Iowa re-evaluates its budget. But in Des Moines, some lawmakers are trying to buy more time.
On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved $3 million to keep the school open one more year. It is included in a larger budget plan, known as House File 2465.
Sen. Bill Dotzler says while the funding has passed the Appropriations Committee it still has a long road ahead. The funding needs to pass the full Senate, and would also have to be approved by members of the House.
Meanwhile, the University of Northern Iowa issued this statement about HF 2465:
"The University of Northern Iowa appreciates the Iowa General Assembly's interest in Pre-K through 12 education in Iowa. However, we think it's important to reiterate that while Malcolm Price Laboratory School has served the university and community well, the school was not the foundational element of the UNI teacher-education program. The new model for the Iowa Research and Development Center for Education Innovation will allow faculty more time to do research, professional development and create partnerships statewide.
There currently are 345 K-12 students enrolled at MPLS. The Cedar Falls, Waterloo and surrounding districts have opened their doors to welcome these students and plans continue to move forward to close MPLS by June 30."
The Iowa Board of Regents voted to close Price Lab back in February after a recommendation by UNI President Ben Allen.
