CR Kennedy bone marrow drive looking for donors

Some students at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids are trying to get community members to donate bone marrow at their second annual drive.

A group of 12 students have put together the drive. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A bone marrow transplant is necessary for someone with a disease that decreases the strength of his or her immune system, like leukemia.

Donors have to be between the ages of 18 and 60 in order to be eligible to become a member of Be The Match Registry®. Matching a donor's and recipient's tissue is hard, according to the registry, so only about 70 percent of the people that need a transplant actually get one. The students said the more people they can get to sign up, the more unique tissues they will have to provide for patients.

It normally costs more than $100 to join Be The Match Registry®, but the Kennedy group of students are covering this fee for participants through a silent auction.

The students said last year they got 104 people to sign up, but most of these were faculty members so they said they need the help of the community.
