IA House Minority Lead sends House Democrats home

A democratic leader says he's sending his members home because there's no end in sight to this year's session.

Wednesday House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that Iowa Democrats want to spend up to $50 million more than Republicans, and he says the difference hasn't narrowed despite weeks of negotiations.

McCarthy says there's no reason for most lawmakers to be at the statehouse so he sent Democrats home.

"Unfortunately this is really a feeling like Groundhog's Day, all over again, shade of last year," Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D - Des Moines) said.

Both the Republican House Speaker and the Democratic Senate Leader disagree with McCarthy.

They say both sides are getting closer to a compromise.

The legislature was scheduled to adjourn more than a week ago.

Even still, a bill that squeezes about  $3.5 million in savings out of the state budget is now on the way to the governor's desk.

The bill is a collection of small saving ideas, like printing official documents on both sides of a piece of paper and relying more on email.
