Name change for Iowa City's downtown district

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Henceforth, it will be known as the Iowa City Downtown District, http://downtowniowacity.com/ at least in its new, more straightforward name.

The legal name remains far more complicated. Legally, it's the Downtown Iowa City Self Supported Municipal Improvement District.

The downtown Iowa City Board of Directors voted Wednesday to change the name to make it more clear and concise, and to more accurately represent the broad geographic and demographic landscape of the Iowa City Downtown District.

The Iowa City Downtown District is a non-profit organization funded with contributions from property taxes assessed to properties located in downtown Iowa City and the Northside Marketplace, as well as financial support from the University of Iowa.

The goal is to sustain downtown Iowa City as a unique and economically viable center for business and entertainment, and as a social and cultural center for all of Johnson County.

The legal name for the Iowa City Downtown District will remain the Downtown Iowa City Self Supported Municipal Improvement District.
