Kernels end road trip on losing note

The Cedar Rapids Kernels ended their nine-game road trip on a losing note, falling to the Dayton Dragons 3-2.

Down 1-0 in the fifth, Chevy Clarke tied it, scoring on an RBI ground out by Abel Baker.

Dayton would add a run in both the sixth and eighth innings, extending their lead to 3-1.

The Kernels began to rally in the ninth inning.  Ryan Jones led off with a triple and then Kaleb Cowart hit a double, scoring Jones, cutting the Dragons lead to one.

Cowart would make it to third on a ground out by Frazier Hall and then Gary Mitchell would get a walk, putting runners on the corner with one out.

The rally would fall short when Clarke struck out and Trevor Hairgrove hit a grounder to the shortstop, forcing Mitchell out at second base and ending the game.

Mike Johnson took the loss for the Kernels, allowing one run on one hit while walking one in one inning of work.

The Kernels are off Wednesday, but return to Perfect Game Field on Thursday, hosting South Bend at 6:35 p.m.
