Cedar Rapids native and Medal of Honor recipient, Army SSG Sal Giunta, will award a scholarship at his alma mater.
SSG Giunta will present the scholarship at Kennedy High School on May 1, at 6:30 p.m. during Kennedy's annual Senior Recognition Night.
The scholarship, which was established by the Brian LaViolette Foundation, pays tribute to the memory of Sgt. Josh Brennan and Spc. Hugo Mendoza who were killed during the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan battle. Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor for risking his life to rescue wounded soldiers during that battle.
Giunta, who graduated from Kennedy in 2003, agreed to the scholarship only if the recognition was in honor of Brennan and Mendoza.
"We are very proud of Sal Giunta and honored to have an annual scholarship in his name," Dr. Mary Wilcynski, Kennedy Principal, said in a written statement. "We are especially excited to welcome Sal home to Kennedy High School for our special recognition night. What an honor for all of us."
A community reception will be held at 5:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Black Box Theater. Giunta will then address members of the senior class and their families who are invited to the recognition night at 6:30 p.m. Seating in the auditorium is limited to Kennedy seniors and their family members.
