Iowa State plans to raise scholarship money

Iowa State University is planning to raise millions of dollars for scholarships that the university's new president says will help students combat mountains of debt.

President Steven Leath says the scholarship funds would be earmarked as more money is raised for research. He says the scholarships might claim 30 to 40 percent of the total raised.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York estimates about 15 percent of Americans have taken out student loans.

President Barack Obama will be at the University of Iowa on Wednesday to talk about student debt.
