Kernels win two straight over the weekend

After losing two straight to end last week, the Cedar Rapids Kernels were able to take games from Bowling Green and Dayton over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Kernels avoided the sweep in Bowling Green by beating the Hot Rods 4-3 in 11 innings.

Cedar Rapids was down 2-0 until the fifth inning.  Chevy Clarke hit a two-run homer to tie the game and then Ryan Jones hit an RBI single to score Abel Baker.

The Hot Rods tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Juniel Querecuto scored on a two out RBI single by Jeff Malm.

The score would stay tied until the 11th inning when Andy Workman came home on Kevin Moesquit's RBI single. The Kernels bullpen combined for 6.1 innings of relief, allowing no runs on only two hits.

Stephen Tromblee picked up the win, pitching the final one and one-third innings for the Kernels. He allowed no runs on no hits while striking out one and walking none.

On Sunday, the Kernels traveled to Dayton, Ohio to begin their three game series.

Cedar Rapids took the lead in the first inning when Trevor Hairgrove came home on the Kaleb Cowart groundout.

The Kernels scored the final run of the game in the fourth inning when Gary Mitchell came home on the Andy Workman sacrifice fly.  Kernels take the first game of the series 2-0.

Eswarlin Jimenez and Joe Melioris combined to pitch the shutout for the Kernels.  Melioris picked up the win, pitching five innings of relief.  He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked none. Jimenez got the start and went four innings. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked none.

The Kernels and Dragons continue their series Monday evening in Dayton at 6:00 p.m. central time.
