Metcalf, Paulson come up just shy of Olympics spot

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Former Hawkeye Brent Metcalf and former Cyclone Travis Paulson made the finals, but couldn't finish things out as the two just missed out on clinching a spot on the US wrestling squad.

Metcalf's loss to former Oklahoma assistant coach Jared Frayer marked the first time he'd ever lost inside Carver Hawkeye Arena.  Frayer swept Metcalf in a pair of 3 period matches 5-1, 0-4, 6-0 and 2-1, 0-1, 2-2.

Former Cyclone and current Iowa State assistant coach Travis Paulson made it a step closer.  Paulson actually beat former Northwestern national champ Jake Herbert in his opening finals match.  Herbert, however, rallied to win the final 2 to clinch the team USA spot for the London Olympics.
