The Bubble comes down in Iowa City

The Bubble has come down.  The indoor practice facility that served Hawkeye athletics was deflated Friday morning and will soon be removed by construction workers.

While many consider it a staple of Hawkeye culture, University officials say safety concerns and high energy usage meant it was time for The Bubble to go.

A brand new indoor practice facility farther west from Kinnick Stadium will replace it.

"It's really kind of fun to see this and really have another top notch facility for football, but also our other athletic teams and recreational services that utilize that facility," said Jane Meyer, Senior Associate Director of Athletics.

Removal of the Bubble will also help clear room for the new Iowa Children's Hospital.

The space will undergo construction and be replaced by a large parking lot that will fit 689 parking spaces for hospital staff.

Officials have a targeted completion date of Sept. 5, 2012.
