Hot Rods smoke Kernels in series opener


The Cedar Rapids Kernels could only manage six hits Thursday night as they dropped game one of their series in Bowling Green, Kentucky, 6-1 to the Hot Rods.

The Hot Rods scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Kernels starter Jairo Diaz gave up a bases loaded walk to Taylor Motter, which scored Ryan Brett.

Bowling Green would add to their lead in the third.  Matt Rice hit an RBI single plating Jeff Malm for what would be the eventual game winning run.  The Hot Rods made it 3-0 later in the inning when Jake Hager hit a sacrifice fly to deep left, scoring Motter.

The score would remain 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when the Hot Rods would score three more runs.  Todd Glaesman hit sacrifice fly to right field scoring Drew Vettleson making it 4-0 Hot Rods.  Later in the inning, Cameron Seitzer hit an RBI double, allowing Jeff Malm and Taylor Motter to score making it 6-0 Bowling Green.

The Kernels would score their lone run in the eighth inning.  Matt Scioscia hit an RBI single scoring Chevy Clarke who had tripled earlier in the inning.

Kernels starter, Jairo Diaz (1-1), pitched three and two-thirds innings and took the loss. He allowed six runs on 10 hits, struck out two and walked four. Logan Odom pitched two and one-third innings in relief, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two. Ty Kelley allowed no runs on no hits in two innings of relief. 

Starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (2-1) got the win for the Hot Rods. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits, striking out six and walking one.  Reliever Trevor Shull threw three innings in relief.  He allowed one run on three hits.  Charlie Cononie finished the game, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out two in one inning of work.

The Kernels will try to rebound against the Hot Rods on Friday night in Bowling Green.
