Construction officially begins on Cedar Valley SportsPlex

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

With wide smiles and a couple shovelfuls of dirt, a project more than a decade in the making has gotten its official start.

City leaders, community leaders, and major donors of the Cedar Valley SportsPlex came out in the rain to see its ground breaking.

"The Cedar Valley SportsPlex is going to be one of these events that is going to make history and turn the page in Waterloo," said Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark.

The SportsPlex will cost around 26 million dollars. Officials with the Waterloo Development Corporation, the group spearheading fundraising, say they still have to raise two and half million dollars to pay for the SportsPlex's leisure pool.

"We haven't gotten any money from Vision Iowa. We haven't been able to apply there, but we'll probably try to go back to Vision Iowa, but the rest will be private donors, which it has been the time so far," said Rick Young of the Waterloo Development Corporation.

"There's a lot of individuals we're going to contact on a one-on-one basis to try to get this thing completed. We feel confident that we've gotten this far that they'll recognize the need in the community and the greater Cedar Valley to have this type of facility," said Dan Waters of the Waterloo Development Corporation.

The SportsPlex is expected not only to help the health of the Cedar Valley, but also help local businesses and the local economy.

"It helps immensely when you're showing people from like John Deere, when they're trying to bring people in, the hospitals bringing in doctors, healthcare workers. We have to be able to show the Cedar Valley is the place to go," said Young.

The Waterloo Development Corporation will be the owner of the SportsPlex through its construction and until all the pledges have been received. Once that's finished the City of Waterloo will own and operate the facility.

The cost for a membership at the SportsPlex is expected to be around $60 a month.

Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2013.
