Dubuque loses Girgensons for remainder of season

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Dubuque Fighting Saints have lost captain Zemgus Girgensons for the rest of the season after he broke his jaw.

The team says Girgensons sustained the injury during his first shift on Tuesday night, but continued to play through the second period, even tallying an assist, until he could no longer take the pain.

Girgensons' jaw will be wired shut for a minimum of four weeks.  He is expected to make a full recovery during the offseason.

Girgensons was injured while checking a player from Team USA during Dubuque's 7-3 win over Team USA in the first round of the USHL playoffs.

The Fighting Saints travel to Indiana for their first semifinal game on Friday against the Ice.  That series will return to Dubuque on Wednesday for game three.
