President Obama to visit Iowa City next week - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

UPDATE: President Obama to visit Iowa City next week

President Obama will visit the University of Iowa in Iowa City on Wednesday, April 25.  Mr. Obama will speak at 1:20 p.m. at the UI Field House.  Tickets will be available to students, staff, and the general public beginning at Noon at the Iowa Memorial Union.

It's part of a three-state tour to launch an effort to get Congress to prevent interest rates on student loans from doubling in July.  The president will also visit North Carolina and Colorado.

The White House says more than 7.4 million students with federal student loans will see their interest rates double on July 1 unless Congress steps in to keep them low. For each year Congress allows the rate to double, the average student with these loans racks up an additional $1,000 in debt.

The White House says this will be an official Presidential visit, not a campaign stop.

The visit will follow First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to Des Moines on Tuesday, April 24.  She will host a fundraiser for her husband's reelection campaign.

This will be President Obama's second visit to the area this year.  In January, he visited Conveyor Engineering and Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids.
